Goldman Sachs Sponsors Scavenger Hunt for HCE Clients

July 11th was a perfect summer day. That day Jersey City’s waterfront provided the backdrop for HCE’s first ever scavenger hunt. On that day 25 volunteers from Goldman Sachs along with a professional scavenger hunt firm from New York City joined HCE’s clients in a two hour adventure. Each year Goldman Sachs gives each of its employees a day off to perform a volunteer activity in the community. Following a pizza lunch the volunteers from Goldman Sachs worked with HCE clients through hands on art project that resulted in the design of motivational posters that will be displayed at HCE during October, which is National Disability Awareness Month.

HCE hold First Ever Summer Institute

This month a group of Extended Employees from HCE’s program has the opportunity to participate in HCE’s first Annual Summer Institute this month. Staff from HCE’s Transition Services offered workshops each day for a group of Extended Employees in areas pertaining to job readiness. The workshop came as a response to the large number of Extended Employees who expressed their readiness to seek competitive employment. These workshops will become an annual summer event and the workshops offered will vary depending on our clients’ interest.

Summer Youth Program for Transition Students Underway

Twenty students from HCE’s Transition Program are participating in a six week program that began this month. As part of this program the students had the opportunity to earn a paycheck and at the same time participate in a range of community service activities. New to the program this year was the incorporation of a training module in first aid and CPR. All students received training in this area under the supervision of Gary Shaw, one of our Transition counselors, who is also certified to teach first aid and CPR. The response of the students was so positive that this will be incorporated in our coming school year transition program.

Metro Scanning Get a New Cleaning Crew

As part of its various employment preparation programs, HCE program participants are responsible for cleaning HCE’s Montgomery Street’s 26,000 sq. ft facility. This month this group assumed the additional responsibility of cleaning our Scanning facilities. We are confident that they will do a god job and at the same time get some understanding of the scanning operation.
