October 2008

HCE Celebrates National Disability Awareness Month

To recognize the contributions of Americans with disabilities and to encourage all citizens to ensure equal opportunity in the workforce, the Congress has designated October of each year as "National Disability Employment Awareness Month." This year 80 employees of the Bank of New York Mellon each spent a day at HCE. As part of the day HCE program participants engaged in an employment related scavenger hunt. It was a huge success and gave the employees of BNY Mellon an opportunity to meet some very motivated potential employees.

HCE Receives Grant from the Henry H. Kessler Foundation

This month HCE was notified that it was the recipient of a Signature Grant from the Henry H. Kessler Foundation to develop Metro MSS (Metro Mail Management Services). This $389,000 grant funded over two years will create additional employment opportunities for HCE participants, and joins our other records management businesses- Metro Shredding and Metro Scanning. A special thank you to the foundation for its support!

Staff from HCE Participate in Diversity Training

HCE has joined into a partnership with St. Peter’s College. As part of the College’s grant from the William Simon Foundation, the college has formed a Non Profit Advisory Board and will be available through its faculty to provide training to area non profits. This month’s training on Diversity will be followed by another training session scheduled for November 12, 2008.

Hudson Employment Alliance Scores Big

For the past year via a grant from the Henry H. Kessler foundation, HCE has taken the lead in initiating the Hudson Employment Alliance. With the end of grant funding, HCE has made a commitment to continue the HEA. This month the Alliance was instrumental in getting Hudson County to finally agree to open an Office for the Disabled. Until now this county was one of only two in the entire state that did not have an Office.

HCE’s Transition Services Expands to Offer New Program for Autistic Students

With the beginning of the school year 2008, twelve students with autism from the Jersey City Public Schools began a new four year school to careers program here at HCE. These students will attend their host high school for academics for ½ of the day and participate in HCE’s work based programs for the remainder of the days. Let’s all welcome these students to our program.
