Hudson County
hosts Joining Forces Breakfast
This month Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise hosted the
County’s first Joining Forces Breakfast to accelerate the efforts of local
employers to hire individuals with disabilities. The breakfast attracted both
governmental as well as private area employers. In a case of leading by example
the County of Hudson has been highly proactive and has several contracts with
HCE that has resulted for work opportunities for over 50 individuals with
disabilities.
Bank of New York Mellon’s Week of Caring Impacts HCE Participants
This company’s commitment to volunteerism once again
benefitted the individuals who participate in HCE’s programs. During this month
75 employees of Bank of New York Mellon each spent a morning one on one with an
individual with a disability attending one of HCE’s programs. Students in HCE
Transition program spent a morning with one of these volunteers and received
motivational letters as they transition from school into the workforce. The
adults in our Rehabilitation program also received one to one mentoring.
Palisades Medical Center Joins Business Participating in HCE’s Transition
Program
The long term trend toward more employment in health care
is expected to continue, with many health care occupations expected to grow. To
prepare the students in our Transition Program to be ready, this month Palisades
Medical Center joined the businesses currently serving as work sites for our
transition students.
With comprehensive medical services, a quick-response
emergency department -- including a heliport -- and a centralized location
overlooking Manhattan, Palisades Medical Center serves as a major health care
resource for Hudson and Bergen Counties in New Jersey.
Get Ready for 2010 with a New Calendar
With our hectic lives, we all need to be well organized. To
help you keep track of events, HCE is selling calendars. Your purchase of this
calendar for $10.00 will not only help you keep organized, but it will assist
HCE to purchase winter jackets for its Litter Patrol. Each day, 26 individuals
from HCE help to keep the streets of Jersey City clean. With winter upon us it
is getting colder. These jackets will be invaluable when the temperature hits
the freezing point.
Metro Scanning Starts it’s Largest Training Class
The month after completing a specialized one week
vocational assessment a group of ten individuals began our newly redesigned nine
week training program in all aspects of records management. The curriculum has
been modified to include additional modules in computer application as well as a
hands on opportunity to earn while learning. As part of our recent enhancement
participants will begin to do actual work during training. The response of
enrollees to this has been highly positive.
Jersey City Armory Cleaning Resumed
The month our program participants once again demonstrated
their to "do whatever it takes” attitude to get the job done. A telephone call
from the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs on a Friday,
resulted in the arrival of a full cleaning crew the next day to clean at an
event with 2000 attendees. Congratulations to all for a job well done!
HCE Employees Initiate Blue Ribbon Task Force
This month eleven of HCE’s staff have kicked off a Blue
Ribbon Task Force meant to enhance vocational opportunities for the individuals
in its Extended Employment Program. As we go forward in these very uncharted
times, we simply cannot do business as usual. Our facility based employment
program has been impacted by the recent downturn in the economy and declines in
the industries that have traditionally fueled work for these individuals. In the
coming weeks this Task Force will initiate a series of meetings to brainstorm
this very important issue and to develop a concrete and specific action plan
meant to enhance this program and the services that it offers to individuals
with severe disabilities.
HCE Opens Center of Excellence in Document Management
HCE’s facility at 68-70 Tuers Avenue now houses a regional
center dedicated to recruitment, training, and research in all aspects of
records management. This Center of Excellence contains a specialized assessment
unit, a training program in all aspects of records management, and state of the
art equipment.
The Center is designed to
house a team of individuals who
will promote collaboration and use best practices to drive business results in
both the private as well as the public sector.
This Center of Excellence will serve as the
critical hub of innovative and creative activity for the organization. This hub
is meant to ensure an alignment of this innovation strategy across the entire
organization.
