The Working for
Independence Now program (WIN) is a four-year program during which time
students participate in half-day work programs at businesses throughout
the community. They are provided with job coaching and mentoring to help
them be more successful in their jobs. During the first
year, students use their half-day for education.
They take introductory courses in computer skills, entrepreneurship
and attend courses that are specific to their chosen careers. In the following three years, students are placed at work sites in groups of seven. At each site students have the opportunity to learn about specific jobs in a particular industry or employment area. Students rotate through departments and are “mentored” by someone within the company. In this way students are learn about many different types of jobs.. When they complete the program, students are matched with employment opportunities, further job training, or post secondary educational programs.
